Year-End Wrap-Up and Budgeting for 2025: A Financial Guide for Success

– by Curtis H. Parry Jr. CFP®, CHFC®, CLU®, RICP®, WMCP®, CASL®
Founder & CEO

The year 2025 is starting to peek over the horizon like sunrise beams over the ocean plane. With that said, this time of year I get asked a lot about “what kind of tools or apps are best for budgeting?”. My reply is always the same. What’s in your heart? It is an unexpected response, but budgeting is not as mechanical as people think. Budgeting is money, and money is emotive, so why not dig deep and follow what’s in your heart.

One way to do this is by using my 1-2-3-4 method. If you commit to being disciplined, you get to have fun with each step in the process:

1.    Give the first 10%: If you start from a place of gratitude and giving, you have the opportunity to make a difference in the community each year.

2.    20% you save: The tried-and-true approach to putting it in the well and paying yourself first, helps you to remain disciplined in saving for seen and unseen future needs.

3.    30% to Uncle Sam: This may need to be adjusted per your yearly earnings, but at the minimum, set aside funds for one of life’s constants – taxes.

4.    40% to your wife: What’s that saying? Happy wife, happy life? Well, don’t think of this as a direct deposit into your wife’s account. Think of it as funds to keep love, life, and children enriched and nourished.

Year-End Wrap-Up: What Did You Spend and Where?

Before planning for the future, take a moment to review your financial year. Assess your spending habits and categorize your expenses. Did you exceed your budget in any area? Were there unexpected expenses that derailed your plans?

This reflection can be eye-opening. For example, you might find that dining out or monthly dues quietly chipped away at your savings goals. Or, perhaps you successfully managed to invest more than expected. Use this data to identify trends and areas for improvement.

Forecasting for 2025: The Importance of Starting Strong.

Heading into 2025 without a budget is like starting a road trip without a map. A well-thought-out budget is your financial GPS, guiding your spending, saving, and investing decisions.

Forecast your anticipated income, fixed expenses, and variable costs. Account for life changes such as home purchases, education costs, or even a dream vacation. By setting realistic goals and tracking progress, you will be better equipped to handle the unexpected and stay on course.

Have a Planning Session with Your Spouse.

Money conversations with your spouse or partner are essential for aligning goals and avoiding misunderstandings. Dedicate time for a year-end planning session to discuss:

– Shared financial goals

– Adjustments needed in spending habits

– Contributions toward savings, investments, and retirement accounts

Make this session collaborative and forward-focused. Celebrate the financial wins of 2024 and strategize for a stronger 2025.

ABOUT CURTIS

What makes Curtis Unique is although most clients know him in a suit, you would never see him like that in his natural habitat. You can find him most often very casually dressed, most likely not wearing shoes, in the water, exploring, and enjoying Florida. He loves to travel with his wife, Trish, and their 3 kids Jude, Presley, and Ash. His “no shoes required” lifestyle exceptions are church, golf and exercise….and if he could do those barefoot, he would. He lived in Hawaii for 5 years, so you may catch him giving his signature “shaka”.
